Internet, media, marketing and honesty

Over the past 15 years of using the internet, one of the memes that always comes up is that of “connecting people” and that of getting to the bottom of things, the “spreading of knowledge”.

My experience is a different one: it used to be this way. I remember when researching about my canoo trip in northern Canada, I found lots of really useful pages of people who had done these trips before or who lived in the area and took pleasure in informing. This sort of research has pretty much disappeared from my life, because it’s almost impossible to find valuable information. SEO and bland content farming created a worthless web of information (pardon the pun).

Going hand in hand with this is the delusion of democratizing relationships because you can now directly “connect with your fans”. As this latest story on Mashable about George Takei’s ghostwriter shows, it’s the same as it used to be: the audience is falling for manufactured publicity from professional media creators, only now it’s even harder to recognize and the audience is actively helping to promote it.

I’m sorry, but this doesn’t strike me as a free thinking society but more of a blatant display of how sheepish humans can be and how important it is to be alert and observant.

BBC poll: Germany most popular country in the world

I truly wonder how the f this happened:

Germany is the most positively viewed nation in the world in this year’s annual Country Ratings Poll for the BBC World Service.

via BBC News – BBC poll: Germany most popular country in the world.

… and it’s not even April fools day or anything. What a strange headline 73 years after some of the worst atrocities the world has ever seen committed by Germans.

But let’s not be complacent, there’s still a lot to be done:

  • turning Germany into a true immigration country
  • fixing the worlds energy/co2 problems through smart new technology
  • elevating the education system to even higher standards
  • focusing on raising children as true world citizens not just engineers
  • oh and better cookies.

BR Spacenight

ASCII Network

How the Internet really works – and it’s not pretty

When the tech pundits talk about free speech then they easily forget the power structures of the “new world”

This article is worth a read If you have little experience and understanding of what is going on under the hood.

And to the people over at EFF and netzpolitik.org I shout: why don’t you work on democratically based tools and mechanisms to keep forces balanced instead of moving over the currently broken equilibrium of the Internet to the real world?

When it comes to mods, the political model of Reddit is not so much a vast digital democracy, as it’s often framed by fans and users, as online feudalism. Moderators like Violentacrez are given absolute control over their turf in exchange for keeping the kingdom of Reddit strong. Moderators become more or less powerful in direct relation to the number and popularity of the subreddits they moderate, so they try to take over other subreddits to boost their profile in the community. Inevitably, Reddit’s administrators develop relationships with the most influential moderators. Like feuding medieval lords vying for the king’s favor, moderators form alliances or wage epic flame wars over power struggles.

And Googles record gets tainted further

It is amazing to me, that the supporters of free speech (which I am also!!) still see Google as the free and open web.

They have been funding institutes releasing wrongful information about how legislation that is trying to protect content creators may destroy the free internet. But how much interest do they really have in this free pluralistic internet?

But please, read for yourself!
