There’s an interesting discussion going on about directors on one of the composers forum that I frequent and some guy made a good point:

The most effective directors I have worked with or simply met understand that the job of a director is to foster an environment where the creative department heads are allowed to bring what they do best to the table, and the end result of those collaborative efforts is much greater and much more effective in story telling than any one individual’s contribution. (i.e. The sum total is greater than any one part.) Yes a film is ultimately the director’s vision. He is the captain of the ship. But the ones who are usually successful over the long term are the ones who know how to keep the ship headed in the right direction…while allowing the creative individuals they hired to be the experts in their various fields to solve the problems presented to them along that journey.
